Define Success and Move Towards It: Part 2

In this blog series, we’re focused on the abstract idea of change. We see the Kingfield community growing and changing in powerful ways and we’re hoping to harness some of that energy during our Goal Setting Workshop on Saturday, December 12th. An important part of this conversation is the idea of success. How can we, or rather, how can you, measure accomplishment or completion of your goal unless you’ve defined success for yourself?

Merriam-Webster defines success as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame,” but this interpretation doesn’t feel complete. According to legendary basketball coach John Wooden, “Success is peace of mind; which is the result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” Getting warmer. Stephen Covey, popular author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," says that “if you carefully consider what you want to be said of you in your funeral experiences, you will find your definition of success.” Even warmer still.

The truth is, success is entirely subjective.

Success can be whatever you want it to be. It can be a data point in a particular health marker, like blood pressure, total cholesterol, or BMI. Success can be wrapped up in a competition, championship, award or public acknowledgement.

Success is deeply personal and it cannot be measured based on someone else’s accomplishments - and if it is, take some time to rethink that marker. When we ask you to take a moment to define your bigger picture, your measure of success, we challenge you to dive into yourself for that answer. Own it, let it be 100% within your control to achieve.  

Take a moment to consider your recent successes. When was the last time you felt a sense of accomplishment? Did you set a goal, make plan and move forward in a calculated way to achieve it? Or, were you perhaps moving right along and to your surprise - stumbled upon a success. We’re not asking you to look back and catalogue everything you’ve achieved to give yourself a hearty pat on the back. We’re asking you to think about the intentional or unintentional manner in which you approached and achieved success. We are truly better humans when we remain aware, mindful and conscious of our actions.  

This is your intermission to reconnect. As we get ready for the new year, we ask you to slow down, reflect and create a vision for your success in 2016. Sit with it, say it out loud, write it down.

Kingfield represents a group of determined and highly focused individuals making meaningful, conscious decisions every single day in order to move towards their defined goals. We reject that static dictionary definition of success because things like wealth and fame don’t hold a candle to the success we see every day in and outside the gym.

When we come together on Saturday, December 12th, there will be countless definitions of success in the room. There will be infinite numbers of ways to move towards those successes. We will ask you to set up milestones and intermediate goals to keep you on track with your greater vision of success, and by showing up for your peers and putting pen to paper we become even more #Kingfieldstrong.
