A bit about: Hannah Dormanen

WHY DO YOU DO CROSSFIT?

Because it's fun to be fit.  I love the challenge that comes with each workout and the feeling of accomplishment when I do something I couldn't before.  (Seriously, it took me a solid 3 years to figure out the coordination required to string together double unders.)  I love the camaraderie and the time spent in the gym with awesome people who like exercising for a lot of the same reasons I do.  I like surrounding myself with people who push me and make me better.  

HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOU?:   

I am stronger both mentally and physically than ever before. I think a lot of that stems from the confidence I have gained since beginning CrossFit, not only in my athletic abilities but also when it comes to body image.  Women in the CrossFit community continue to inspire and set an amazing example by celebrating the strength and capability that comes from their bodies rather than focusing on solely on appearances.  It's amazing how liberating it feels to join them in that mindset! 

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP COMING BACK?

The people, without question.  Like I said earlier, it's fun to be fit, but it's 100 times better when you can share in it with your friends!  All around, Kingfield is an incredible crew of people who are unbelievably supportive of one another.  The way everyone sticks around at the end of a workout to cheer the last person through their final reps is awesome.  I have definitely been that person.  You're exhausted and you just want it to be over, but the motivation and energy is unreal!   

It is also amazing to know how much the coaches truly care about the people in their gym.  When I was pregnant with my son, Liam, they stuck with me every step of the way.  It was an incredible experience.  In fact, I even PR'd my front squat working with Danny hours before I went into labor.  A PR and a baby in the same day - it's definitely the most bad ass thing I have ever done!  Now, Marcus and I bring Liam with us to class on Saturday mornings.  It's pretty cool to see how at home he feels while he is at the gym.  He loves the people just as much as we do - they've become this wonderful extension of our family.  

DO YOU HAVE A MOTTO? SOMETHING YOU TELL YOURSELF WHEN YOU'RE FIGHTING THROUGH A WORKOUT? IF SO, DO YOU MIND SHARING IT? 

I set a goal for myself before I begin a workout - a time to beat, a person in class to chase, a weight to hit on a movement. Sometimes, the goal is just to finish. It varies, but once I have my goal in mind everything else fades and I'm focused on doing only that. And then, the motto becomes "Just keep moving. Just keep pushing. You CAN do this."

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT OR MOVEMENT?

I will always love any workout that mixes running with body weight/gymnastic movements...probably because this is where I am my best. But, in the last year I've become a lot stronger and more comfortable with barbell movements, so I can get down with those, too. So in summary - everything. Well, everything except heavy thrusters. I am fairly certain I will never be a fan of those!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

Hola Arepa Brunch. The chicken & cachapas. Every time.

WHAT'S YOUR POWER SONG?

Anything by Beyonce.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WE DON'T ALREADY KNOW:  

I played basketball growing up and throughout college.  Thousands of games, a few handfuls of highlights, but the most memorable 15 seconds of my career came in 10th grade when I ran head on into another player and literally smashed my nose into hundreds of pieces.  Thanks for catching it on tape, Dad.

What is your spirit animal?

A bear...fiercely protective, easily hungry.
