A bit about: Lindsey Garner

WHY DO YOU DO CROSSFIT?

I chose to move my body only in ways that bring me joy. Because I have worked for lululemon for so long, and part of our job is trying new ways to move your body, I have tried a shit ton of different workouts. Adult ballet (yeah…really), trampoline fitness, barre classes…none of them clicked. None of them made me feel empowered and ready to conquer the world quite like a dirty gym floor and a barbell full of bumper plates. It’s what my body was designed to do.

HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOU?

I started CrossFit in 2007. Since I joined my first gym, I have been a member at six amazing gyms and met some of my closest friends through these workouts. I have watched the sport grow and change into something truly amazing. Through this sport, I have shifted my own thinking about my body. I used to try to conform my body into something I thought it needed to look like. I used to punish it and hide it. I used to be ashamed of my big thighs, and would run until exhaustion to try to change them. CrossFit has given me the power to look at my body and recognize its purpose and beauty. I love my thighs and quads because they mean I can squat a hell of a lot of weight.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP COMING BACK?

You amazing humans! I love the workouts themselves, but more than anything, I love learning about all of you. I love finding out that someone I have been working out with is also a mom of three, or a doctor or a cancer survivor. I love to learn why each and every one of you shows up every day, and what makes you tick. CrossFit has such a powerful gift of connecting those that might not ever have the chance and bonding them together through the pure accomplishment of pull-ups or a squat PR.

DO YOU HAVE A MOTTO? SOMETHING YOU TELL YOURSELF WHEN YOU'RE FIGHTING THROUGH A WORKOUT? IF SO, DO YOU MIND SHARING IT?

I don’t have a “motto” per se, but I always remember that the time I get at the gym is not something I just “do”, but it’s a privilege and it’s my time for self-care. I remind myself that this hour is the one time in the day that I can guarantee that I’m just Lindsey; not mom, or a wife, or a student or employee. No one here depends on me or is going to ask anything of me. I get to just show up and move.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT OR MOVEMENT?

My favorite WOD is “Thompson”, a CrossFit hero WOD named after a friend of mine who was killed in service to his country in 2009. JP Thompson is a hero, an amazing husband, father and Soldier and was also a member of my very first 6 am CrossFit class. There is something about early morning classes that creates a bond. I remember stumbling into the gym in the mornings and being happy to see his smiling face. His WOD is intense…and leaves you feeling pretty rough for a few days, but doing it feels like the best way to honor him and the early mornings we used to spend together at the gym. Anyone ever want to do this or any other Hero WOD, I will gladly accept the challenge of spending time in recognition and honor of those who lost their life in service. My husband and I have had the true blessing to both serve our country have been fortunate enough to have worked alongside so many heroes who gave their life for our freedom. I will gladly suffer for a short while for all they have done and the suffering their families continue to endure.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

Ok, this is not fair. I love food. I love to cook. I love to grocery shop. I love to eat. If I had to pick a dinner for the rest of my life though, it would be steak salad. I love steak. A lot. Rare steak. Like, still mooing.

WHAT'S YOUR POWER SONG?

Outkast, old school. ATLiens or Black Ice (Sky High) by Goodie Mob

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WE DON'T ALREADY KNOW:

I’m kind of an open book, ya’ll. Seriously. I share way too much. I am going to retire to a tiny house in Asheville, North Carolina. I’m not really into “stuff”, so tiny houses are my jam. I’ll just have to convince my husband to get rid of his seven bikes.

WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL?

Maybe a mountain goat…I love the mountains and the woods, and goats are amazing.
