"My Open" - Dave Ames

"My First Open" with Dave Ames

How did you find out about the Open?

A friend of mine started CrossFit well before I did and he told me about his first Open.

What was your first open workout that you completed (one from class or perhaps you've done one before we started this cycle)?

I did 15.5 - it is 27 - 21 - 15 - 9 thrusters (95/65 lbs) and calorie row. You do 27 thrusters, a 27 calorie row, 21 thrusters, a 21 calorie row, etc.

How did it go and where did you complete it?

I did the workout during Saturday open gym at Kingfield with a group of people. Coach Caitlin talked extensively on strategy before the workout, which I have really enjoyed as a part of our preparation for the Open. CrossFit workouts are obviously a physical activity, but sometimes the real challenge is in your head. I like thinking through workouts and planning how to pace, when to breathe, and when to push.

My game plan for 15.5 was to start cautiously and finish strong, which I stuck to for the most part. I may have dramatically laid on the ground for 10 minutes after the workout, but overall it went pretty well!

Why are you participating in the Open?

CrossFit Kingfield is a strong community - people get to know one other and there is loads of camaraderie and support. We also do fitness and like to see each other improve. In the Open I’m hoping to surprise myself, see somebody else surprise themselves, and have a blast.

What would be your favorite Open workout?

I don’t mind barbell cycling, wall balls, and rowing.

What would be your least favorite Open workout?

Anything that is longer than 14 minutes feels really long to me. Sometimes a 20 minute workout feels like forever.

What movement do you expect to see this year?

People say burpees, so I’ll go with that. Everyone can do burpees!

What movement do you hope to see this year?

Eating pizza and fries for time.

For those people wondering if they should compete in the Open

If you don’t do CrossFit, the Open may seem like a macho and super competitive fast exercising contest. While some people (myself included) push themselves to do their best, they are only competitive with themselves. This is going to be my first Open, but it seems like the Open is just another CrossFit Class with a little extra fun and support. If you don’t do CrossFit I’d encourage you to stop by Kingfield and check it out. It may seem intimidating or intense at first, but after 5 minutes you’ll realize it’s just a bunch of people having fun.
