"My Open" - Maddie Meyers

What was your first open workout that you completed?

The first Open workout that I ever competed was in 2012 and the very first workout was as many reps as possible in 7min of: burpees.

How did it go and where did you complete it?

When I did the Open workout I was at Crossfit Edina and I was less than a year into starting Crossfit, so I was still pretty new to the movements. I remember the second workout was:

As many reps as possible in 10 min:

30 snatches @ 45lbs

30 snatches @ 75lbs

30 snatches @ 100lbs

30 snatches @ 120lbs

I was time capped with 2 snatches into the 75lbs. In the end it went pretty well because I tried my best and it was a blast.

Why do you participate in the Open?

I participated in the 2012 Open for a few reasons. The first was because I had a pack with the people that I started Crossfit. The pack was where ever we were stationed, we would all sign up for the Open and do the workouts. We had a group email chain going on each week telling each other how it went and all the tips and tricks we had learned.

The second reason why I competed back in 2012 was because at the time, my mom was at Edina as well, and she would come and watch all of us. The whole gym was involved and it was a a fun challenge.

This is my first year that I am not (officially) signed up for the Open. I am still doing the workouts, but my interests have slightly changed over the last year and Crossfit has taken a back set. I love being a part of the 'Friday Night Lights' that the thought of not participating in that, never crossed my mind. Kingfield's community is unlike any others and being a part of it, during the Open, is extremely inspiring.

What has been your favorite Open workout?

My favorite Open workout, so far, was in 2016. It was the second workout and it involved toes to bar, double unders and squat cleans. I enjoyed it because these are all movements that I feel confident in.

What has been your least favorite Open workout?

My least favorite workout was also in 2016 and it involved a lot of deadlifts, wallballs, rowing and handstand pushups. I hated it because well it just sucked.

What movement(s) do you expect to see this year?

Overhead squats, toes to bar and wall balls

What movement do you hope to see this year?

Well, I would feel most comfortable with the clean and jerk

For those people wondering if they should compete in the Open, what would you say to them?

Do it. You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. You're gaining confidence in your abilities, knowledge in the sport and you are doing it with not only people at Kingfield, but around the world. Thats pretty cool :)
