When it comes to a healthy eating pattern, we’re willing to bet most of you at Kingfield have a great grasp on the “what” part of the equation.
But you might lack an understanding of how much of that healthy food is enough to support your goals.
If you have goals for your health, body composition or athletic performance, tracking your food and eating to your unique macronutrient needs is the way we can get more precise about that “how much” side of the equation.
When you gain the skills to track your macronutrients, or “macros,” you’re also gaining valuable insight into how macros affect your hunger, fullness, energy, cravings—and so much more.
Getting experience in macro tracking sets you up to make educated decisions about your nutrition based on how you want to look, feel and perform. It’s the method and approach that will help you confidently answer the question, “How much food is appropriate for me?”
That’s why we’ve decided to partner with Registered Dietitian and macro-tracking expert, Emily Field, for a 5-week challenge that will teach you the fundamentals of macro-tracking as well as how to apply the skill long term. As an online-only nutritionist, Emily has applied a macros-based approach with hundreds of clients to help them get strong by eating more and stressing less about nonsense diet rules.
Because everyone has unique health, body composition and athletic performance goals, she’s become known for her expertise in tracking macros as a way for people to:
>> figure out how much food is appropriate for them given their activity level
>> find food freedom and stop feeling guilty about enjoying a little white bread or white wine on occasion
>> ditch the idea that they have to resort to depriving diets to see a little weight loss
>> be in the driver’s seat of their body instead of feeling like it’s some elusive mystery to crack
Reaching out to a nutritionist to help with the macros approach was a game-changer for many of the Kingfield coaches. Check out their reflections on macro tracking below.
The biggest benefit of tracking macros was learning how much food I was actually eating - or not eating - and how that made me feel.
After starting to track, I noticed on days when I had a very busy schedule, I tended to under eat - relying on caffeine-containing drinks and coffee to keep me going. Then, by the end of the day when I was starving, I’d eat copious amounts of whatever was in front of me!
As soon as I began consciously eating enough every day, (i.e. more) I get hungry which I’ve learned is simply a reflection of an increase in my metabolic rate. When I eat enough, I tend to lose weight and generally feel even in energy all day long.
Because of the time I spent learning how to track macros, I know exactly why I feel “off” or don’t perform my best and it’s no longer a mystery. I’ve found tracking a great way to help me achieve personal fitness and health goals.
Learning the ins and outs of how protein, fats and carbohydrates work in my body was eye opening.
When I started to eat enough of the right mix for me, my mental and physical health changed for the better. Not only was my mood more balanced and positive, but I continued to stay lean while performing at a high level - and I’ve been doing it for years. Learning how to eat to support my training was a game changer for my long term journey.
I spent time learning about macros and how to eat to my targets so I can confidently use the approach when I need it - especially when my goals and training volume changes over time.

Before tracking, I felt like certain foods were off limits and that only certain foods were acceptable. This led to a seemingly endless cycle of restricting and binging.
Tracking has encouraged me to be more mindful of the treats and alcohol I consume. I used to constantly skip meals because I’d get busy with my kids, and then try to "make up for it" by eating a bunch of random snacks or a large dinner. I couldn't figure out why I was exhausted and cranky in the afternoons, and it's because I wasn't eating enough to support my activity level or fitness goals!
Tracking macros is more freeing than I ever anticipated. Prior to trying this, I was sure I was eating too much, but clearly the reverse was true. This is the first time in my life that I’ve attempted to change my eating pattern and I’m actually encouraged to eat MORE, not less!
you want to break up with depriving diets for good and learn which foods and how much food really works for your body.
you are in your element online and prefer video, online group discussion, digital resources and social media over textbook education
it lights you up just thinking that you’ll be learning an entirely new approach to nutrition
you are ready to stop categorizing food as either “good” or “bad”
you have and/or want to continue to work on a healthy body image and high self worth
you are looking for a strict meal plan to tell you what to eat each day
you are more comfortable “trying on” different approaches to see quick, but temporary results
You are content to spend the rest of your life in a never-ending cycle of Googling questions rather than make a one-time effort to learn the skill of macro tracking
You tie your worth to your eating habits or the size and shape of your body.
I HAVE TO EAT THE SAME THING EVERY DAY TO MAKE IT WORK.
Be honest: Don’t you already do this? If you took a look at your kitchen or your grocery list from week to week, you’d probably find the same 10-15 foods.
Unlike rigid diet plans, macro-tracking will actually afford you way more options — and probably even inspire you to get more creative in the kitchen. Choose any cuisine, any prep method, as big or small a portion as you want… and, if you want it, you can have it.
IT’S COMPLICATED AND TIME CONSUMING.
If you’re already planning a menu, shopping for groceries and even glancing at ingredients or nutrition labels — you’re more than halfway to tracking macros. If anything, counting your macros simply provides a little more framework to the way you select foods and build your meals.
I HAVE TO BE PERFECT TO SEE RESULTS.
What would you say if I told you that the whole macro-tracking approach isn’t an exact science? Between user error in measuring food, database errors in the tracking apps and “best guess” macro prescriptions — it’s definitely not an exact method!
But, even in its flaws, macro-tracking is still one of the most efficient and effective ways to lose weight, change your body composition and eat to support athletic performance. Perfection is NOT required.
“IT WORKS FOR YOU, BUT IT PROBABLY WON’T WORK FOR ME.”
I get it. You’ve been burned by plans and programs that claim “get lean fast”.
As I know from working with hundreds of clients from a variety of backgrounds and with a huge range of goals, macro-tracking is an amazing unifier in that it will work with you. Try reframing macro tracking from “another attempt at losing weight” to “a tool to help me learn how much I need to eat to support my body”. Tracking macros will strip away all the unnecessary rules from food and leave you with a solid understanding of what you’re eating and how it makes you feel.
the macros approach is different than counting calories, one-size-fits-all meal plans, and diet programs that focus on elimination and deprivation. learn more about how tracking macros can be the most efficient and effective way to get lean + strong.
I have been exactly where you are.
Active and strong, but no muscle definition to show for it.
At a healthy weight, but carrying more fluff and padding than I was comfortable with.
I was a mix of tired, sluggish and hangry while eating all the “right” foods.
It wasn’t until I started focusing on macronutrients that I completely turned my relationship with food around and that I started seeing changes in the way I feel, look and perform.
Now, I effortlessly maintain my weight, body shape and size that I am confident with—I feel amazing in my skin! I understand how to intuitively eat to my macronutrient needs without tracking everyday and I have incredible flexibility with my food choices. And, of course, eating enough supports my training for and recovery from Crossfit!
All this is possible for you, too.

This experience has been a total game changer for me! The strategies that I have learned are not my daily habits, which is a beautiful thing!
I cannot recommend this challenge enough! I found all of Emily’s content to be educational and realistic. I am so thankful to have the resources and the knowledge about how to build meals to support me through this busy time in my life.
